Grieving/Loss
The Grieving Process
There is simply no way to short-cut the grieving process. There is only movement through to integration of a new reality. And it is always a pace that is your own.
Sometimes though, there are soft places where you can get stuck.
We expect mourning to contain expressions of grief, shock, sadness, numbness, even anger. Over time these feelings begin to lessen to levels that feel manageable.
Except when they don’t.
Complicated Grief
Complicated grief is often experienced as very intense or interfering a great deal with the ability to manage daily life. It also does not improve over time. It remains acute, can involve intrusive memories or images, intense physical feelings, and being stuck. It can even be experienced as completely numb and unable to mourn grief.
Acute grief is a form of Post-Traumatic Stress.
How EMDR Can Help
EMDR works with all these issues in a way that is validating and respectful of your experience and value system.
By having the opportunity to process stuck points and reprocess intrusive memories and images, the natural process of moving forward can happen again.
EMDR helps to release some of the pain of the loss, allowing you to acknowledge the reality which is part of integrating the traumatic parts.
Resolution is not forgetting; it is witnessed as a greater ability to connect to positive memories which facilitates the security of having loved. Grieving allows you to connect to the significance of the relationship, with greater ability to go into your future with new meaning and an increased sense of self.
Most importantly, EMDR frees you to move through the process of grieving in your own right timing.
