EMDR

Memories – why do they hijack you?

No matter how hard you try, there are memories that still seem to grab hold of you and hijack your mind in directions you don’t want to go. Even if you have tried therapy, you can’t seem to achieve resolution. They happened long ago, but those old memories are still living in the now.

How different would life be if you could put them in their place, really in the past, moving forward free of them?

Let’s alleviate those sabotaging memories

With EMDR, you’re not learning to manage your symptoms and triggers. Your brain, given the correct input and opportunity to reprocess the memory, releases the physical symptoms of activation. The result is the triggers and resulting physical symptoms are alleviated for good.

What is EMDR?

EMDR is a dynamic and effective brain-based approach that helps people process through memories in a way that is unique from any other counseling method. It uses the brain’s natural processing system and allows people to move on and walk away free.

I have had clients tell me they accomplished more toward resolution of their symptoms using EMDR than they had in decades of counseling. Most importantly, they report that they feel resolution because triggers they have experienced for a lifetime disappear and they no longer must “manage” them. Clients are often surprised by what they accomplish in short periods of time.

For example: Tom originally came to me with severe symptoms of PTSD. As we worked together and targeted a current trigger he was experiencing, he identified a connection to a memory of abuse as a young child. With reprocessing, he was able resolve the activation.

When Tom returned to session the following week and we did our check-in, he reported with a sly smile: “When I left last week, I felt good; but I admit, I couldn’t believe that something I lived with most of my life could really be gone. So, I went home and found a liquid the smell of which had always been a trigger for me. I opened it up and took a big sniff, and I got – nothing! I really couldn’t believe it, so I took another big whiff – and other than it smelling bad, I was not activated at all!

This is just one example of what makes me so passionate about EMDR – it’s all in the results. To witness my clients overcome and put to rest huge life circumstances is so humbling. I celebrate with them the resilience they experience as we walk together on their journey toward healing. I am honored to join them one step at a time.
